American athletes would still take part.
President Joe Biden said he is thinking of staging a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in China to protest that nation’s governmental human rights abuses. Even if an official delegation is not sent to the Winter Games, U.S. athletes would still take part as usual, but there would be no accompanying delegation of officials and politicians.
It would be a way for the U.S. to make a statement about China’s human rights record without punishing athletes, and it is “something we are considering,” the president said.
The 2022 Olympic Games are scheduled to begin on February 4 in Beijing, which means time is running out for the president to make his decision.
Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas has urged the boycott saying it would be the “absolute bare minimum that any civilized nation would do.” He called for a full boycott with “no athletes, no administration officials, no corporate sponsors” from the U.S.
