Power plants request the removal of regulations from two administrations ago.
On Friday, the Supreme Court agreed to review a case where they struck down rollbacks of power plant pollution regulations that were placed during President Obama’s administration. Certain states and coal companies created the petition that brought this case back to the Supreme Court, claiming that the Environmental Protection Agency, which oversees the regulation of greenhouse gases, is overstepping by imposing pollution caps on an entire industry.
Each side of the issue is watching the outcome closely. Environmental advocates hope the regulations stay in place, claiming they help to curb the effects of climate change. West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who led the states’ petition, said that the Clean Air Act “granted [the] EPA too much authority,” and that “the Supreme Court should define the reach of EPA’s authority once and for all.”
