White House releases statement after president’s offhand comment creates concern.
During a CNN town hall last week, President Joe Biden answered affirmatively when asked if the U.S. would defend Taiwan from Chinese attacks. His statement was not in line with 40 years of supportive neutrality by the U.S., causing some diplomatic concern. Chinese officials warned the U.S. against meddling in Chinese affairs, and the White House quickly released a statement on Friday to reaffirm their previous stance.
“The U.S. defense relationship with Taiwan is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act. We will uphold our commitment under the Act, we will continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense, and we will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo,” the White House stated.
