Judge Mark Pittman

Mark Timothy Pittman was born in 1975 in Big Spring, Texas. He earned an undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law. He clerked at the North Texas U.S. District Court before entering private practice.
He was a trial attorney for the Commercial Litigation Branch of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Division and then served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas. Pittman worked as a Senior Attorney at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and also was an Enforcement Attorney with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Fort Worth.
He served as a judge on a state district court and was later appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to be a justice in Texas’ Second Court of Appeals.
He was nominated by President Trump to serve as a judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He was confirmed by the Senate in a 54-36 vote after the invocation of cloture. He received his commission in August 2019.

U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman ordered United Airlines to pause its plan to put unvaccinated employees on unpaid leave after the company announced in August that all United employees would be required to get a vaccine and that any workers who requested religious or medical exemptions would be placed on indefinite leaves of absence.
Six airline employees filed a federal lawsuit against the airline last month in response to the mandate, arguing that the company failed to provide “reasonable accommodations” for those who do not desire a vaccine and that United Airlines’ decision violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act.
“The Court now concludes that it is necessary to issue this Temporary Restraining Order to avoid risking irreparable injury and to maintain the status quo in the case pending the Court’s hearing and resolution of plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction,” he wrote.
“The Court is not currently ruling on the merits of the parties’ arguments on these points,” the judge wrote in his order. “Rather, the Court seeks simply to avoid the risk of irreparable harm to the parties and to maintain the status quo while the Court holds an evidentiary hearing.”
At least 593 of United’s 67,000 employees were at risk of termination due to not being vaccinated as of September 28. The judge’s order will expire on October 26.
