Contractors that do not report cyber attacks will incur large fines.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday that it would be updating its policies on contractors reporting cybersecurity incidents. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco expressed that the status quo would no longer be acceptable to the DOJ saying, “For too long, companies have chosen silence under the mistaken belief that it’s less risky to hide a breach than to bring it forward and to report it. Well, that changes today.”
Contractors will be expected to report any hacks, ransomware, or other cyberattacks or face large fines from the government. These changes come after the U.S. has experienced major attacks on SolarWinds and the Colonial Pipeline. Congress recently passed mandatory reporting legislation. The Justice Department’s new fines endeavor to better enforce the law.
