Executive order establishes goal for electric vehicles.
On Thursday, President Joe Biden signed an executive order in which he sets a target for half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric or carbon-free by 2030. His order is part of an effort to reduce the use of gasoline in transportation, considered the biggest driver of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
The administration also issued a proposal to impose stricter standards for fuel efficiency and tailpipe emissions for cars and light trucks as it seeks to undo a major regulatory rollback made under the previous administration.
The executive order setting a sales target of 50 percent electric vehicles does not carry the force of law, and it will apply to battery electric vehicles and fuel cell-powered and plug-in hybrids.
The Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency set the economy standards and transmissions rules.
