Judge Sharon Gleason

Sharon Louise Gleason was born in October 1957 in Rochester, New York. She earned an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and received her Juris Doctor from UC Davis School of Law. She was a law clerk at the Alaska Supreme Court.
Gleason engaged in the private practice of law until she was appointed to the Alaska Supreme Court. She was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Alaska by President Barack Obama. The Senate confirmed her and she received her commission in January 2012. She is the first female judge to serve in the District of Alaska.

The Trump Administration’s plan to open up a national forest in Alaska to logging has been blocked by District Court Judge Sharon Gleason. She wrote that the Trump Administration did not adequately consider the environmental impact of the move as required by law, and agreed with environmental groups that the Forest Service’s analysis of the impact had “serious shortcomings.”
The Trump Administration had announced in October its intention to expand logging even further in Alaska by opening up the Tongass National Forest. The move had the support of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski as important to sustaining economies in southeast Alaska.
