Resolution specific to Iran
Legislation intended to limit President Trump’s ability to wage war against Iran is ready for a final vote in the Senate. The House of Representatives passed a similar resolution last month.
The U.S. Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to declare war. After the targeted death of the Iranian military commander Soleimani last month, many in Congress feared that the U.S. was on the brink of war with Iran.
The resolution would require the president to remove American troops engaged in hostilities against Iran unless Congress declares war or passes a specific authorization for the use of military force.
President Trump has discouraged the passage of the resolution. “It is very important for our country’s security that the United States Senate not vote for the Iran War Powers Resolution. We are doing very well with Iran and this is not the time to show weakness,” he wrote on Twitter.
