Legislation is designed to save $4.6 billion per year.
On Friday, members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee released the contents of a new Post Office reform bill. Designed to tackle many of the struggles the nation’s delivery service has faced, the bill is designed to save roughly $4.6 billion per year for the next ten years. Currently, the bill has gained the support of ten members of the minority party. This means it has the capability to overcome the Senate filibuster if every Senator in the majority also backs the bill.
Senator Gary Peters, one of the cosponsors of the bill said, “this commonsense, bipartisan legislation would help put the Postal Service on a sustainable financial footing, ensure it is more transparent and accountable to the American people, and support hardworking postal workers who deliver rain or shine to communities all across the country.”
