Extremely potent drug trafficked by Mexican cartels.
From October 2020 to April 2021, Customs and Border Protection agents discovered over 6,000 pounds of fentanyl, one of the world’s deadliest drugs. The fentanyl was seized as part of the agency’s border defense and is nearly 2,000 pounds more than the previous year, or any year prior.
The drug is a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin. Most fentanyl is made in China, much of it exported to Mexico where the powdered form is pressed into pills or placed in capsules. Over 87,000 people in the U.S. died in 2020 from a drug overdose, and deaths involving these man-made opioids rose 60 percent in fiscal year 2021.
