Green New Deal for Public Housing Act Introduced

Legislation is sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Legislation to overhaul the nation’s public housing stock, which would cost up to $172 billion, was introduced Monday by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. The “Green New Deal for Public Housing Act” would transition the public housing system as “swiftly and seamlessly as possible” to zero-carbon emissions that produce on-site renewable energy, according to their news release.

They said the $172 billion would be invested over a period of ten years and would affect nearly 2 million people living in some 950,000 public housing homes. They claim the legislation would reduce the cost of water bills among public housing residents by 30 percent and would slash energy bills by up to 70 percent per year. It would also create about 240,000 jobs, the two sponsors said.

“Just to address the backlog of critical maintenance repairs in [the New York City Housing Authority] and nowhere else, chipping lead paint, broken heating systems, failing gas utilities, would require $40 [billion] — what is currently in the American Jobs Plan,” Representative Ocasio-Cortez said about President Biden’s proposal.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of Congress as they consider the public housing proposal that has been introduced.
  • For wisdom for legislators as this expansion on the administration’s infrastructure plan is debated and negotiated.
  • That the needed improvements to public housing would be accomplished in the most efficient manner.
