Praying for Our Leaders in Government
Executive Branch: Pray for the President and his Administration
President Joe Biden rolled out a set of executive orders on gun control last week. He maintained that “nothing” that he recommended “impinges” on the Second Amendment. However, he said, “No amendment, no amendment to the Constitution is absolute. You can’t yell ‘fire’ in a crowded movie theater—recall a freedom of speech. From the very beginning, you couldn’t own any weapon you wanted to own. From the very beginning that the Second Amendment existed, certain people weren’t allowed to have weapons.”
President Biden has nominated two new officials to key immigration positions in his administration. Chris Magnus the chief of police in Tucson, Arizona, will be tapped to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Ur Jaddou, the former head of a migrant advocacy lobbying group in Washington, for director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Senate confirmation is required.
Pray for God’s purposes to be accomplished as the administration moves forward with its policy priorities.
Legislative Branch: Pray for Senators and Representatives in Congress
Eleanor Holmes Norton, the delegate to the House of Representatives representing the District of Columbia, said she supports a “retractable fence“ around the U.S. Capitol. Despite the Good Friday vehicular attack at the Capitol complex that left one police officer dead and another wounded, she said that permanent fencing is not needed.
Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona expressed her views regarding the Senate’s agenda being rushed through. The rules aren’t the issue, she said. “When you have a place that’s broken and not working and many would say that’s the Senate today, I don’t think the solution is to erode the rules. I think the solution is for senators to change their behavior and begin to work together, which is what the country wants us to do.”
Pray for Congress to exert effort toward more bipartisan cooperation to solve the issues facing the nation.
Judicial Branch: Pray for Supreme Court Justices and Federal Judges
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer during an address at Harvard Law School spoke out against the practice of court-packing, telling law students such a move could “further erode public trust and weaken the court’s influence.”
President Biden ordered the creation of a bipartisan commission to study potential reforms to the Supreme Court including whether to expand the number of judges. The commission will have 180 days to report its findings.
Pray for the justices of the Supreme Court as they issue opinions and for discernment for the president’s commission on court reform.
