Alabama and Georgia hit with deadly supercell weather system.

Destruction from tornadoes has claimed the lives of six people in the Southern U.S. The state of Alabama experience 17 tornadoes in a single day on Thursday. Georgia reported five twisters and Mississippi had one. A tornado emergency was issued by the National Weather Service as the extreme risk threatened the southeastern states. Thousands are without power due to downed trees and powerlines.
Three supercell thunderstorms spawned the tornadoes, which traveled at least 100 miles and caused violent damage over several hours.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued tornado watches for parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Severe storms spawning tornadoes have already damaged or destroyed homes in Birmingham, Alabama. Trees and powerlines have also been felled by the tornadoes.
The severe weather alert stated, “Numerous tornadoes expected. Widespread damaging winds and scattered significant gusts to 80 mph likely. Widespread large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2.5 inches in diameter likely.”
