Bipartisan leaders agree to schedule.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that leaders of both major parties in the U.S. Senate have agreed to a timeline for the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.
Action begins Tuesday afternoon with a dispute over the constitutionality of the proceedings. A majority vote will move the process forward and is expected.
Across the next four days, there will be oral arguments evenly divided between impeachment managers from the House of Representatives who will prosecute the charges and attorneys for President Trump.
Senator Schumer said, “Each side will have ample time to make their arguments.” The Senate will take a break for the Sabbath, beginning at sunset on Friday, and return no sooner than Sunday afternoon to complete the work, he said.
Early next week, after initial arguments are completed, the Senate plans to debate and decide whether to call witnesses, potentially including the former president himself, before the trial can be brought to a close.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the agreed timeline “preserves due process and the rights of both sides” and would give senators “ample time to review the case and the arguments.”
A two-thirds majority of the Senate, 67 votes, would be required to convict.
