Outlawed Iraqi group is said to be responsible.
Eight rockets targeted the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Sunday night. The embassy is located in the heavily fortified Green Zone.
An Iraqi military statement said “an outlawed group” launched the rockets, injuring one Iraqi security person manning a checkpoint and causing material damage to a residential complex and some automobiles. The residential complex is usually empty.
The attack has sparked fears of renewed unrest as next month’s anniversary of the U.S. slaying of an Iranian general draws near.
The embassy’s C-RAM defense system, which is used to destroy missiles in mid-air, was activated to deflect the attack. In a statement, the embassy acknowledged there was some minor damage to the compound.
“As we have said many times, these sorts of attacks on diplomatic facilities are a violation of international law and a direct assault on the sovereignty of the Iraqi government. We call on all Iraqi political and governmental leaders to take steps to prevent such attacks and hold accountable those responsible,” the embassy’s statement said.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the protection of America’s personnel in its embassies across the world.
- For peace during the approach of the anniversary of the death of the Iranian general.
- For the U.S. military as troops are withdrawn from the Middle East and Afghanistan.
