Most active hurricane season on record.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a statement regarding the conclusion of the record-breaking 2020 Atlantic hurricane season at the end of November. A historic 30 named storm systems and 13 hurricanes developed this year, 12 of which made landfall in the United States with six of those becoming major hurricanes with wind speeds of over 110 mph. The second-highest number of named storms on record came in 2005, which produced 28.
“The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season ramped up quickly and broke records across the board,” said acting NOAA administrator Dr. Neil Jacobs. “Our investments in research, forecast models, and computer technology allowed forecasters at the National Weather Service, and its National Hurricane Center, to issue forecasts with increasing accuracy, resulting in the advanced lead time needed to ensure that decision-makers and communities were ready and responsive.”
