Voters see more restrained exchange than first meeting.
President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden engaged one another in their final debate Thursday evening.
With less than two weeks until the election and already some 50 million voters having cast their ballots, each sought to clarify his position while critiquing the other’s, with plans for dealing with criminal justice, climate change, immigration, foreign policy, and, above all the coronavirus.
There were fewer interruptions of one candidate against the other; the greatest interrupter was the debate moderator who, nevertheless, won praise for her control of the debate topics.
Neither side dealt a knock-out blow to the other, and both men also avoided self-inflicted political injury.
At one point, President Trump challenged former Vice President Biden on his son’s efforts to cash in on his father’s position and the former vice president’s apparent involvement in the scheme, to which Mr. Biden said, “I have not taken a penny from any foreign source.” In return, the former vice president claimed that President Trump’s campaign activist, Rudy Giuliani is “a Russian pawn,” which the president dismissed.
For viewers, the debate was the continuation of the outsider versus the career politician, and may not have significantly influenced undecided voters.
