Matthew 14:27 – But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Were you afraid of the dark as a child? What would you do today if you saw a shadow of someone you didn’t know coming toward you while you were somewhere dark? It would be natural for you to be afraid! But that anxiety would probably disappear as soon as you heard the voice of someone you know and love.
The disciples experienced something very similar to this in Matthew 14. It was somewhere between 3:00 am and 6:00 am. It was dark, they were in a boat, being beaten by the wind and waves. All of a sudden, they saw a figure walking toward them in the middle of the sea. They thought they were seeing a ghost coming toward them – wouldn’t you?? But as they started to cry out in fear, Jesus called to them immediately: “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Do you feel like you are experiencing darkness today? Maybe you’ve been beat down by the wind and waves of life. This will not stop Jesus from pursuing you. He is walking on the water, calling to you: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
