USDA Withdraws Proposed Rule on Salmonella in Poultry

The regulation creating new safety standards for raw chicken and turkey will be reviewed.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service FSIS has withdrawn a rule proposed by President Biden’s administration that would have increased the restrictions on raw poultry with salmonella. The rule would have required poultry companies to test for six strains of the bacteria in chicken and turkey and prohibited the sale of any that exceeded the new threshold.

The FSIS stated, “The agency believes that the comments have raised several important issues that warrant further consideration.” FSIS also explained the withdrawal will “allow the Agency to further assess its approach for addressing Salmonella illnesses associated with poultry products.”

The USDA also announced that enforcement of a final rule regulating Salmonella in breaded and stuffed raw chicken products has been delayed from May 1 to November 3.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the Food Safety and Inspection Service administrator as officials assess increased restrictions on Salmonella.
  • For wisdom for Secretary Rollins as she heads the Department of Agriculture.
  • For Americans to use safe food sanitation and handling practices.
