FTC Reports $470 Million Lost to Text Message Scams in 2024

Despite fewer reports, scam-related texts increased, with package, job, and bank fraud texts topping the list.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that consumers lost $470 million to text message scams in 2024, a fivefold increase from 2020, despite a decrease in the number of scam reports. The most common scams involved fake package delivery notifications, fraudulent job offers—particularly online “task scams” requiring upfront investments—and impersonated fraud alerts related to bank accounts or purchases. Other tactics included fake toll payment notices and “wrong number” messages that evolved into romantic or financial cons.

Officials recommend avoiding links or engagement with unexpected texts and using trusted contact information when verifying a message. Consumers are encouraged to use available tools to block unwanted messages before they arrive. To help prevent further losses, the FTC advises consumers to forward suspicious texts to 7726 (SPAM), report them through Apple or Google messaging apps, and file reports through the FTC’s Fraud Report site.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for American consumers to block spam messages and not respond to scams.
  • For Chair Andrew Ferguson to be led by God as he heads the FTC.
