He said the IMF is “failing to critique the countries that need it most.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke to the Institute of International Finance this past week, where he offered a moderate version of the financial messaging to President Trump’s administration.
“America First does not mean America alone,” Secretary Bessent said. “To the contrary, it is a call for deeper collaboration and mutual respect among trade partners.”
The international economy has been unsteady since President Trump’s tariffs were implemented. The treasury secretary largely advocated for fiscal collaboration in his speech and criticized the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for downgrading its forecast for U.S. economic growth, lowering its estimation from 2.7 percent growth to 1.8 percent.
“We are open to critique. But we will not abide the IMF failing to critique the countries that need it most—principally, surplus countries,” Secretary Bessent said.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Bessent to be discerning as he assesses the state of the U.S. economy.
- For wisdom for President Trump and his trade team as they negotiate new agreements with global trading partners.
