DHS secretary says it is being enforced because it is the law.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced last week that they will be implementing REAL ID requirements starting May 7, warning that passengers without passports or compliant ID “can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint.”
REAL ID updates were implemented by a federal law passed in 2005, requiring improved standards for traveler identification in the wake of 9/11. These implementations have been long-delayed, and this May 7 deadline is the result of a three-year extension enacted in 2022.
“The reason that Real ID is being enforced is because it’s a federal law,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said. “It will just allow people to get an ID that they should be on our planes. They should be people that [have] United States residencies. And legal status will be checked.“
Currently, 81 percent of travelers at TSA checkpoints present acceptable identification, including a REAL ID issued by their state. The agency added that it “will continue with additional screening measures for those without a REAL ID until it is no longer considered a security vulnerability.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Acting Administrator Adam Stahl as he oversees the Transportation Security Administration.
- For Secretary Noem to receive God’s guidance as she heads the Department of Homeland Security.
- For U.S. officials as they seek to ensure the identity of U.S. citizens and legal residents.
