Senate Holds Hearing on Ending Time Changes

President Trump advocates for permanent Daylight Savings Time.

The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held a hearing last week to consider the elimination of twice-a-year time change in the United States, finding that while all agree on its elimination the issue is whether to stay on standard or daylight savings time.

Committee Chair Ted Cruz presided over the hearing, weighing whether Congress should implement permanent daylight saving time, which provides sunlight later in the evening and morning, or permanent standard time, in which the sun rises earlier in the morning and sets earlier in the evening.

“There are very real and complicated issues and countervailing arguments on both sides,” Senator Cruz said. “There is widespread agreement on locking the clock … but the reason we’re holding these hearings is because these are real arguments and they have real impacts on people.”

President Donald Trump said last month that he would be willing to sign off on time change eliminating legislation while also validating the ongoing debate.

“If something is a 50/50 issue, it’s hard to get excited about it,” President Trump said from the Oval Office. “I assume people would like to have more light later, but some people want to have more light earlier because they don’t want to take their kids to school in the dark.”

The Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, and reintroduced it in 2023, but neither the House nor Senate committees referred the bill for a vote.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for members of Congress as they consider “Locking the Clock.”
  • For wisdom for the president and his administration as they advocate for the elimination of the time change.
