Over $880 million in unused infrastructure funds to be returned or reallocated
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has officially terminated its Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program, canceling all pending applications from fiscal years 2020 through 2023. Any funds that were approved but not yet distributed will be returned to the U.S. Treasury or the Disaster Relief Fund.
A FEMA spokesperson cited concerns that the program prioritized political agendas over effective disaster response. “The BRIC program was yet another example of a wasteful and ineffective FEMA program. … We are committed to ensuring that Americans in crisis can get the help and resources they need.”
Roughly $882 million in BRIC-related funding, originally authorized through the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, will now be returned or potentially reallocated by Congress in the coming fiscal year. FEMA reports that $3.6 billion remains in the Disaster Relief Fund, which will continue to be used for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts in alignment with current federal directives.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For discernment for interim Director Cameron Hamilton as he oversees FEMA’s disaster response.
- For wisdom for Secretary Kristi Noem as she heads the Department of Homeland Security.
- For U.S. officials as they seek to ensure the efficient and effective use of funding, returning excess to the U.S. Treasury Department.
