Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent was born in August 1962 in Conway, South Carolina. He earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University. He
He into a financial career, becoming head of the Soros Fund Management’s London office. He founded an investment firm of his own, Key Square Group, in 2015.
Bessent was appointed by President Donald Trump to be the Secretary of the Treasury in November 2024. He was confirmed by the Senate and sworn into office in January 2025.
He is married to John Freeman, they have two children. He belongs to the Huguenot Church.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that President Trump’s tariffs did not start the decline in the stock market. The secretary said, “For everyone who thinks these market declines are all based on the President’s economic policies, I can tell you this decline started with the Chinese AI announcement of DeepSeek.”
The treasury secretary also stated that, after implementing the tariffs, the president is ready to make trade agreements. He stated, “We have one of the Vietnamese officials coming in this week, the Japanese are very eager to get over, and I think you’re going to see a couple of big trading partners make deals very quickly.”
Secretary Bessent reported that up to 70 nations have contacted the administration to initiate trade agreements. He said, “It’s going to be a busy April, May, maybe into June.”
After China implemented retaliatory tariffs in response to President Trump’s tariffs, Secretary Bessent said, “I think it’s unfortunate that the Chinese actually don’t want to come and negotiate because they are the worst offenders in the international trading system. And I can tell you that this escalation is a loser for them.”
