Senate Passes Resolution to Block Tariffs Against Canada

Senators in the majority cross the aisle to spare their home states’ economies.

Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined the Senate minority to support a resolution introduced by Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia that would revoke the tariffs placed against Canada by President Trump’s administration. These majority party senators represent states with major industries that sell products to America’s northern neighbor.

“The Maine economy is integrated with Canada, our most important trading partner,” Senator Collins said on the Senate floor. “The tariffs on Canada would be detrimental to many Maine families and our local economies.”

“Tariffs on Canada will threaten us with a recession,” Senator Paul told reporters Wednesday. He and Senator McConnell represent Kentucky, whose bourbon industry brings in $9 billion annually.

The resolution is not expected to pass the House of Representatives.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate as they seek to counter President Trump’s stance on tariffs and the American economy.
  • For discernment for the president and his economic advisors as they implement the tariff strategy and advocate for increased domestic production.
