House Votes Down Rule to Block Proxy Voting for New Parents

House Speaker had attempted to reject the discharge petition filed by Congresswoman Luna.

Eight members of the House majority joined Representative Anna Paulina Luna in voting with the minority party this week to stop a rule that attempted to block a motion to allow new parents to vote by proxy.

Representative Luna of Florida filed a discharge petition in March that, if passed, would allow new mothers and fathers to designate a separate individual to vote on their behalf within 12 weeks of the birth of a child. The petition reached the 218 signature mark necessary to move the petition forward without the approval of House Speaker Mike Johnson, sending it to the House floor for a vote.

In an attempt to block this vote from being held, House leadership entered a separate rule into an unrelated piece of legislation that would have blocked Congresswoman Luna’s discharge petition and any other motion that would seek to allow new parents to vote by proxy. That rule failed and the proxy measure will go the a floor vote.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson, House Majority Leader Scalise, and Minority Leader Jeffries as they preside over the lower chamber of Congress.
  • For members of the House as they prepare to vote on the measure to allow proxy voting by new parents.
