China continues to claim sovereignty over the area.
The United States, Japan, and the Philippines held joint naval drills near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea to enhance regional security and coordination. During the exercises, a Chinese military ship attempted to approach the area but was deterred by a Philippine navy vessel.
The Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity included maneuvers involving the Philippine frigate BRP Jose Rizal, the U.S. Navy destroyer Shoup, and the Japanese frigate JS Noshiro, with helicopters conducting aerial operations and sailors exchanging visits for collaborative discussions.
“We are here to support our allies and support a free and open Indo-Pacific for everyone,” U.S. Navy Lt. Alexander Horvath said.
These drills indicate the strong security alliance of the three nations in response to China’s assertiveness in the region. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, during a visit to Manila for discussions with Philippine officials including President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., reiterated the importance of unified deterrence.
China continues to reject a 2016 international arbitration ruling that invalidated its extensive territorial claims in the South China Sea, leading to heightened confrontations, particularly with the Philippines. Secretary Hegseth visited Japan next during his first trip to Asia to discuss regional security.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For discernment for Secretary Hegseth as he discusses regional security concerns with foreign leaders.
- For Admiral Paparo as he oversees the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
