He held the floor for 25 hours and five minutes in protest of President Trump’s agenda.
Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey broke the record for the longest speech on the Senate floor Tuesday morning, standing behind the podium for 25 hours and five minutes to protest the agenda of President Trump’s administration. The previous record had been Senator Strom Thurmond, who had spoken against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 for 24 hours and 18 minutes.
“I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able,” Senator Booker said Monday evening. “I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our nation is in crisis.”
The speech was not a filibuster, since filibusters seek to block a specific motion from passing the Senate floor. The speech did prevent other Senate business from occurring, since Senators allowed to speak by the presiding officer may continue to hold the podium for as long as they can stand.
Before his speech, one of Senator Booker’s staff members was arrested for carrying a firearm in the Capitol. Capitol Police stated, “All weapons are prohibited from Capitol Grounds, even if you are a retired law enforcement officer, or have a permit to carry in another state or the District of Columbia.“
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For members of Congress as they respectively support or protest President Trump’s agenda.
- For Senator Booker to seek God’s guidance as he represents the people of New Jersey.
