HUD and DOI Explore Affordable Housing Construction on Federal Lands

A joint task force has been launched to fund underutilized federal properties.

Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner and Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretary Doug Burgum released a joint op-ed this week, disclosing plans to identify potential locations for affordable housing on federal lands. This initiative will begin with the launch of their Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing, which will oversee the process of finding “underused” federal lands and zoning them for housing use.

The departments’ joint statement said, “Under this agreement, HUD will pinpoint where housing needs are most pressing and guide the process by working with state and local leaders who know their communities best.“

“Working together, our agencies can take inventory of underused federal properties, transfer or lease them to states or localities to address housing needs, and support the infrastructure required to make development viable—all while ensuring affordability remains at the core of the mission,” Secretaries Turner and Burgum wrote.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretaries Burgum and Turner as they collaborate on the potential for affordable housing on public lands.
  • For officials in the Departments of Interior and Housing and Urban Development as they evaluate underused federal properties.
