Legislators Announce Bill to Lower Egg Prices

Bipartisan proposal seeks to reduce regulations for certain eggs.

Representatives Dusty Johnson of South Dakota, Josh Riley of New York, Pat Harrigan of North Carolina, and Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan introduced the Lowering Egg Prices Act to the House this week, which seeks to alter the egg refrigeration requirements enforced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The co-sponsors of the bill explained that U.S. egg farmers produce both table eggs and breaker eggs. Table eggs are not pasteurized and require refrigeration, while breaker eggs are pasteurized and do not require refrigeration. As current FDA regulations require all U.S. eggs to be refrigerated, an estimated 400 million breaker eggs are thrown away because they do not meet that requirement. The Lowering Egg Prices Act would impose looser refrigeration rules for breaker eggs so that they do not have to be thrown away.

“Eggs are an important staple for American families and businesses,” said Congressman Johnson. “While we search for solutions to stop the spread of the avian flu, we must take steps to bolster our egg supply and lower prices.”

Congressman Riley stated, “The Lowering Egg Prices Act is a common-sense, bipartisan bill to take unnecessary regulations off the books, put hundreds of millions of eggs on the market, and lower your grocery bill.”

“The FDA’s rule is a textbook example of government overreach making life more expensive for hardworking Americans,” said Congressman Harrigan. “For 15 years, this unnecessary regulation has forced businesses to throw away 400 million perfectly good eggs every single year. That’s over 6 billion eggs wasted… There is no public health benefit here, just pure bureaucratic nonsense that’s driving up costs.”

“The consistently rising cost of groceries continues to make things exceptionally hard for families,“ said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet, “and we need to do something about it.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the members of Congress who are attempting to reduce federal regulations to address the high cost of eggs.
  • For officials in the USDA as they seek to contain avian flu without mass slaughter of the nations chick flocks.
