Secretary Rubio says the airline mechanic was imprisoned for two and a half years in Afghanistan.
The State Department announced Thursday that George Glezmann has returned to the United States after being wrongfully detained by the Taliban since 2022. Glezmann, an airline mechanic from Atlanta, was a tourist in Afghanistan when the Taliban captured him.
“George’s release is a positive and constructive step,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. “It is also a reminder that other Americans are still detained in Afghanistan. President Trump will continue his tireless work to free ALL Americans unjustly detained around the world.”
This is the third U.S. detainee that the Taliban has released to the United States this year. The first two were enacted as a prisoner swap, but a Taliban official said that Glezmann’s release was a gesture of goodwill made in hopes of “normalization” in relations between U.S. and Afghani leaders.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Rubio to seek God’s guidance as he heads U.S. diplomatic efforts around the world.
- For President Trump to be discerning as he seeks the release of Americans wrongfully detained by foreign nations.
