Maggie Hassan
U.S. Senator from New Hampshire
Maggie Coldwell Wood Hassan was born in February 1958 in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned an undergraduate degree from Brown University and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law. She became an attorney at a Boston law firm.
Hassan served as associate general counsel for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital before joining a corporate defense and business law firm. The New Hampshire governor appointed Hassan as a citizen advisor to the Advisory Committee to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission in 1999.
Hassan was elected to the New Hampshire Senate in 2004 and won reelection twice. She was elected governor of New Hampshire in 2012 and was reelected two years later. Hassan was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and was reelected in 2022.
Hassan is married to Thomas and they have two children. She is a Congregationalist.

U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire joined Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming in reintroducing the Local Radio Freedom Act in the Senate. The legislation, which was also sponsored in the House of Representatives, opposes royalties for radio broadcasters that would be imposed under the proposed American Music Fairness Act. According to the Congressional Budget Office, imposing the same type of royalty costs that streaming services pay would be a substantial cost for broadcasters.
Senator Hassan remarked, “Granite Staters regularly tune in to their local radio station to catch up on the news around the state, listen to music and stories, and get weather and emergency alerts. I am glad to stand with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in supporting listeners and broadcasters alike.“
She added, “We will keep working to ensure that our local radio stations are able to continue providing vital information and entertainment to communities across our country.”
