Congress Proposes Increase in Government Spending Transparency

The bipartisan bill will require the government to disclose unique spending on USAspending.gov.

Senators Joni Ernst of Iowa and Gary Peters of Michigan along with Representatives Barry Moore of Alabama and Jimmy Panetta of California introduced the Stop Secret Spending Act, which would increase transparency under the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006. This legislation would require the federal government to disclose all expenses organized under the “other transaction agreements” category made by the federal government.

The Government Accountability Office reported in 2023 that over $40 billion in these “other transaction agreements” were not reported on USAspending.gov, the website that the federal government uses to publicly self-report its expenses.

“Bureaucrats have been playing hide and seek with tax dollars for far too long,” Senator Ernst stated. “I am ending the games and stopping the secret spending. The American people will now be able to see how Washington spends their money, so we can identify and cut waste.”

“Americans deserve to know how their hard-earned taxpayer dollars are being spent,” stated Senator Peters. “This common-sense legislation will increase transparency of how the federal government is using taxpayer resources and, in turn, cut down on waste, fraud, and abuse.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of Congress as they consider the legislation to amend the previous act for increased transparency in federal payments.
  • For senators and representatives as they propose bills to reduce secret spending by government agencies and departments.
