Senate Breaks Filibuster, Then Passes Government Funding Stopgap

Senator Schumer votes to advance the continuing resolution to a floor vote before voting against it.

After an uncertain couple of days on Capitol Hill, the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act that passed in the House of Representatives earlier this week met the 60-plus votes it needed to overcome the filibuster on Friday, then received the simple majority, mostly along party lines, required to pass. The stopgap measure will keep the federal government funded through September.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had stated that the majority didn’t have the votes needed for cloture on Wednesday. He said, “Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort,” complaining of the lack of compromise with his party.

After deliberating the possibility of a government shutdown and the opportunity it would give President Donald Trump and his Office of Management and Budget to determine what agencies and workers were essential, Senator Schumer said on Thursday, “It doesn’t address far too many of this country’s needs. But I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option.”

“I believe it is my job to make the best choice for the country to minimize the harms to the American people,” he said in a speech on the Senate floor, “Therefore I will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump and members of his Cabinet to receive God’s direction as they implement the agenda and policies.
  • For discernment for senators and representatives as they address the issues facing the nation.
