Representative Raul Grijalva Dies After Battle with Cancer

The 77-year-old congressman represented Arizona’s 7th congressional district.

U.S. Representative Raul Grijalva passed away on Thursday after a long battle with lung cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer and began treatment in April 2024.

“Rep. Grijalva fought a long and brave battle,” the congressman’s office stated. “From permanently protecting the Grand Canyon for future generations to strengthening the Affordable Care Act, his proudest moments in Congress have always been guided by community voices.”

A graduate of the University of Arizona, Grijalva served in the House of Representatives for 22 years, representing Arizona’s 7th and 3rd Districts. He was ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee, having previously served as the committee chair. He was chair emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

He is survived by his wife Ramona and three adult children.
