Vice President Hosts Taoiseach of Ireland Before Oval Office Meeting

The Irish prime minister had breakfast at the Naval Observatory before meeting with the president at the White House.

Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance welcomed Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin for breakfast before he went to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday. The president traditionally meets with the Irish prime minister near St. Patrick’s Day.

The Taoiseach and his wife visited the Naval Observatory after the vice president’s children had left for school. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Senator Susan Collins of Maine, and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and his wife also attended the breakfast.

“One of the things that we try to do with this breakfast is just remind people of the important bonds of friendship between the United States and Ireland,” explained Vice President Vance. “I think it’s a great opportunity to do that.”

Taoiseach Martin said, “We know that building peace is a difficult and painstaking task, and we are ready to play our part to support the work to end conflict and to secure peace in the Ukraine.”

In addition to a green tie, the vice president wore socks with shamrocks on them, which caught President Trump’s notice in the Oval Office. The president said, “I’m trying to stay focused, but I’m very impressed with the VP’s socks.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and vice president as they pursue peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
  • For President Trump to be discerning in his engagements with foreign ministers regarding international conflicts.
