Justice Department Opens Antitrust Investigation into Rising Egg Prices

Officials suspect large egg producers collaboratively raising prices and reducing supply.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) opened an investigation into rising U.S. egg prices last week to explore potential antitrust activity among large egg producers.

The price of eggs noticeably increased over the past year, with the largest price spike of 15.2 percent occurring between December 2024 and January 2025. This increase has been attributed to the avian flu outbreak, in which egg producers culled their flocks and reduced the supply of eggs in the nation.

However, in a letter to the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission last month, Farm Action, an advocacy group, alleged that the egg price increase was exacerbated by collective price fixing among large egg producers. The DOJ is investigating to get accurate information regarding the situation.

The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins reported this week, “Good piece of news we just got is average cost of dozen eggs has now gone down $1.85.”

The USDA also stated that “no significant outbreaks of (highly pathogenic avian influenza) have been detected in nearly two weeks.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For DOJ and FTC officials as they seek to ensure there is no producer collaboration on the rise in egg pricing.
  • For USDA Secretary Rollins as she oversees the tracking of avian flu and works to reduce the cost of eggs.
