National Park Service Extends Lease for Energy Infrastructure at Historic Site

The new agreement supports New York City’s energy needs and preserves Floyd Bennett Field.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced a 10-year lease extension between the National Park Service (NPS) and Williams Transco for the continued use of historic hangars at Floyd Bennett Field—part of Gateway National Recreation Area. The lease, originally established in 2013, allowed the company to invest $22 million to restore the hangars and transform them into a natural gas station.

This extension will provide ongoing energy support for New York City while preserving the site’s historical value and generating revenue for park maintenance. The site had been repurposed as a temporary migrant shelter, a decision that led to the passage of legislation to prevent future similar uses of national parks.

“Under the previous administration, Floyd Bennett Field was turned into a migrant encampment — an inappropriate and irresponsible use of one of our nation’s historic sites, opposed by the local community,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum.

“Today, we are reversing that mismanagement by restoring the site to a purpose that strengthens our energy infrastructure, benefits the American people, and respects the integrity of our national parks. This lease with Williams Transco is a win for conservation, history, common sense, and energy affordability.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Interior Secretary Burgum as he seeks to conserve historic sites and support energy production.
  • For discernment for Interior Department officials as they review changes to national parks and recreation areas.
