He seeks to facilitate peace negotiations ahead of discussions with Ukraine this week.
President Donald Trump stated that he is “strongly considering” sanctions and tariffs against Russia to speed up negotiations for a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine. He made the announcement after Russia conducted a significant attack against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” the president posted on Friday.
“To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late,” he added.
President Trump’s administration is set to meet with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia this week, where they will begin structuring a potential ceasefire and peace agreement between the two nations. U.S. officials met with Kremlin officials in Saudi Arabia last month, which President Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, described as “positive, upbeat, constructive,” and “solution-based.”
