Jamin Ben Raskin was born in December 1962 in Washington, D.C. He earned an undergraduate degree in government and political theory from Harvard College and received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.   

Raskin was a constitutional law professor at American University Washington College of Law for more than 25 years. He was elected as a state senator in the Maryland legislature, serving nine years before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, assuming office in January 2017. 

He is married to Sarah Bloom Raskin and they have two adult daughters, and they also had a son who is now deceased. He is Jewish.

Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, made a statement for a Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance hearing on the right to self-defense. He said that the Second Amendment does not guarantee citizens “the right to overthrow the government.“

Congressman Raskin took issue with the claims of the majority party regarding their interpretation of the Second Amendment’s protection as the right of the citizenry to arm themselves against a tyrannical government.

Regarding the American Revolution and Declaration of Independence, the representative stated, “The revolutionaries undoubtedly asserted their right as a matter of natural law to overthrow a tyrannical government. That’s very different from saying the Constitution itself guarantees the right to have the means to overthrow the government.“
