The Senate passed the Take It Down Act in February with bipartisan support.
First Lady Melanie Trump took part in a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill this week to highlight the harms of AI-generated pornographic images, also called deepfakes and “revenge porn,“ on adolescents and encourage stronger federal laws to protect youth and hold perpetrators accountable. She encouraged the House of Representatives to pass the Take It Down Act introduced by Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota that already passed the Senate in February. Representatives Maria Salazar of Florida and Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania have introduced it in the House.
“I am here with you today with a common goal — to protect our youth from online harm,” the first lady said. “The widespread presence of abusive behavior in the digital domain affects the daily lives of our children, families, and communities. Addressing this issue is essential for fostering a safe and supportive environment for our young people. I hope today’s roundtable builds awareness of the harm caused by nonconsensual intimate imagery and eventually the approval of the Take it Down Act in Congress.”
“This toxic environment can be severely damaging. We must prioritize their well-being by equipping them with the support and tools necessary to navigate this hostile digital landscape,” Mrs. Trump continued. “Every young person deserves a safe online space to express themself freely, without the looming threat of exploitation or harm.”
She added, “Surely as adults, we can prioritize America’s children ahead of partisan politics.”
