Commerce Secretary Says Tariffs Part of “Drug War,” Not “Trade War”

He says U.S. will reexamine tariffs if flow of fentanyl reduced by April 2.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick described President Donald Trump’s tariffs against Mexico and Canada on Tuesday as part of a “drug war” and not a “trade war.”

“Hopefully Mexico will understand that this is not a trade war,” Secretary Lutnick said after the 25 percent tariffs were implemented. “This is a drug war.”

“If they can stop the flow of fentanyl, and they can prove to the president they can stop the flow of fentanyl, then of course the president can remove these tariffs,” he added, saying that the new deadline for Mexico and Canada to showcase effective border policies necessary to remove the tariffs is April 2.

The Dow Jones dropped by 650 points after the tariffs went into place. Canada introduced its own 25 percent tariff against the United States in response and Mexico is expected to announce its own soon.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Lutnick to be led by the Lord as he heads the Department of Commerce.
  • For wisdom for President Trump as he seeks to reduce the fentanyl coming into the U.S.
