U.S. Senator from Tennessee
William Francis Hagerty IV was born in August 1959 in Gallatin, Tennessee. He earned an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and received his Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt Law School. He was an economic adviser and White House Fellow in the administration of President George H.W. Bush. He began a career in investment banking in Silicon Valley, later becoming co-founder of a private equity investment firm.
Hagerty served four years as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.
During President Trump’s administration, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan. He was elected to the U.S. Senate, assuming office in January 2021.
He is married to Chrissy and they have four children. He is an Episcopalian.

Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee recently introduced the Fixing Exemptions for Networks Choosing to Enable Illegal Migration (FENCE) Act. The legislation would revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofits would knowingly aid illegal immigrants. Some such organizations have also received government funding through grants.
Senator Hagerty stated, “It’s absurd that our federal government has been giving tax exemptions and federal funding to NGOs that have helped facilitate record illegal immigration and carry out the far-left’s agenda, while cloaked as charities.”
The senator continued, “President Trump’s executive order requiring a review of federal funding to NGOs will expose this malpractice that has occurred for too long. I’m pleased to introduce this legislation that will augment the President’s work to hold these NGOs accountable by revoking their tax-exempt statuses.”
