The two leaders have a positive outlook after the U.S. voted not to condemn Russia.
President Donald Trump had a cordial meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, shortly after the United States voted to not condemn Russia for its attack on Ukraine at the United Nations in New York. Longtime U.S. allies France, Germany, Great Britain, and Canada all voted again to condemn Russia.
“My administration is making a decisive break with the foreign policy values of the past administration, and frankly the past,” President Trump said.
President Macron generally agreed with President Trump’s assertions, agreeing that Europe can contribute more to Ukrainian security alongside the United States as the U.S. president reopens discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Now this is a chance, there is a big change, because there is a new U.S. administration,” President Macron said, continuing to advocate for peace in Ukraine. “So this is a new context. So there is good reason for President Trump to reengage with President Putin.”
The French president disagreed with President Trump regarding the money Europe has provided to Ukraine, interjecting that Europe was not just “loaning” money to Ukraine. President Macron stated, “No, in fact, to be frank, we paid. We paid 60 percent of the total effort.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For discernment for President Trump and members of his administration as they seek a peace agreement to stop the war in Ukraine.
- For U.S. officials as they participate in negotiations for peace between Russia and Ukraine.
