President Trump and President Putin expect to meet in the near future.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Aide to the President Yuri Ushakov in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this week to discuss peace in Ukraine. Saudi mediators were also present for the discussions, including Foreign Minister Faisal Bin Farhan and National Security Advisor Musaad al-Aiban.
The meeting came after President Donald Trump spoke separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. The meeting in Saudi Arabia is a step toward a summit between Presidents Trump and Putin.
After President Zelensky expressed disapproval at being left out of the discussion, President Trump pointed out that Ukraine as been under martial law since the Ukrainian president canceled the country’s elections.
After the meeting, Secretary Rubio stated, “The goal is to get a fair deal all parties can accept…I came out thinking the Russians are serious.”
Advisor Waltz said, “This should be a permanent end to the war and not a temporary one as it was in the past.” He said future talks would need to include guarantees about security and territory.
