Labor Secretary Nominee Appears Before Senate Committee

She committed to address the exploitation of children in violation of labor laws.

President Trump’s Labor Secretary nominee, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, appeared before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for a confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

The former congresswoman from Oregon was previously a co-sponsor of the PRO Act, which sought to expand the ability of workers to organize and collectively bargain. Those opposed to that legislation expressed concern that employees would be forced to join unions.

“The PRO Act was the bill to have those conversations,” Ms. Chavez-DeRemer said. “I recognize that that bill was imperfect, and I also recognize that I’m no longer representing Oregon as a lawmaker.”

She continued, “If confirmed, my job will be to implement President Trump’s policy vision and my guiding principle will be President Trump’s guiding principle: ensuring a level playing field for businesses, unions and, most importantly, the American worker.”

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri asked the nominee if she would confront companies who have violated labor laws by exploiting child workers, particularly unaccompanied children trafficked across the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Child labor should not be accepted by anybody in America and the Department of Labor has the enforcement capability to double down if they knowingly are breaking the law and exploiting children in their factories,” Chavez-DeRemer affirmed.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the Senators as they hold the confirmation hearings on the remaining nominees to the president’s Cabinet.
  • For the president and his advisors as they assess individuals for roles in the administration.
