The previous administration had not even done a “wellness check” on the Americans detained in Venezuela.
President Trump’s envoy for special missions, Ric Grenell, recently oversaw the deportation of Venezuelan citizens from El Paso, Texas, including members of the violent Tren de Aragua gang, as they boarded Venezuelan airplanes for repatriation. Envoy Grenell also secured the return of six Americans who had been held in Venezuela.
The special envoy was critical of the previous administration for not even doing a diplomatic wellness check on the U.S. citizens in prison in Venezuela. Envoy Grenell negotiated the return of the Venezuelans and the release of the American prisoners.
U.S. Special Envoy to Latin American Mauricio Claver-Carone stated, “This is not a quid pro quo. It’s not a negotiation in exchange for anything. President Trump himself has made that very clear.”
