The House speaker abandoned negotiations with the minority party after the inability to find common ground.
The House moved a 2025 budget resolution through the House Budget Committee this week after abandoning negotiations. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson commended the effort, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was critical of the passage of the federal budget without accepting minority party input.
Speaker Johnson said of the choice to move forward without compromise, “When we eliminate these — these atrocities is what I call it, it’s outrageous — we eliminate the outrageous fraud, waste of abuse, we do better, and we can then better allocate resources.”
He added, “And it is becoming apparent that they are not interested in keeping the government funded.” Some members in the House and Senate have indicated they would prefer a government shutdown to making budget cuts.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Speaker Johnson and members of House leadership as they work on the budget for the remainder of the fiscal year.
- For senators and representatives to recognize the necessity of reducing government spending.
