He said that members of the minority party made unacceptable counteroffers.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson acknowledged the possibility of a full year of stopgap funding if the House minority does not come to a compromise.
Speaker Johnson said, “We’re trying to negotiate in good faith, but [they] have sent over counter offers that are just simply not acceptable, and they know that, and so we’re looking at all options.”
Temporary funding for the federal government will run out by mid-March if Congress does not pass some form of appropriations legislation before then. The House is attempting to draft a final budget for the 2025 fiscal year, but members of the majority have called for budget cuts while the minority party seeks assurance any agreed-upon compromise will be upheld.
If a budget deal cannot be reached, a full year of stopgap funding may be necessary to prevent a government shutdown, though the consequences of such long-term temporary funding are unclear. Some members of Congress, including Senators Andy Kim, Jeff Merkley, and Cory Booker and Representatives Hakeem Jeffries and Val Hoyle, have expressed the willingness to shut down the government rather than compromise.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for the House speaker and members of leadership as they evaluate funding options.
- For members of the Senate as they negotiate potential federal appropriations.
